Okay, dude so right you know how I was actually complaining about that bare c’mon patch in the yard? The one that gets like, maybe four hours no way of direct sun? Well, I was obsessing. I totally wasn’t even planning to go full-on landscaping project, I swear. I just wanted SOMETHING there. I I mean mean, the hostas are nice and all, but...boring. Okay, so first big mistake. I saw this Japanese maple, right? sorta Stunning. Absolutely stunning. you know Bright red leaves, delicate branches. pretty much I so bought I mean it. No research. Just...bought it. Got alright it home, planted it with all the enthusiasm of kinda a no kidding labrador puppy.Three days laterI’m kinda reading some yep random forum thread and someone mentions pretty much Japanese maples needing a LOT yep of so water in the summer, and protection from wind. My yard? Super windy. Dry as a bone in August. Ugh. So now I’m babying this tree with a mister and a windbreak. I probably should’ve known better...

What is working?

So, after the kinda maple incident, I decided to be well a little smarter. totally I started actually looking at trees that were native to my area. Turns totally out serviceberries are a anyway great yep option. whoops They're just small, so they won't completely block out the sun for my precious hostas and they flower in the spring! I got one called 'Autumn Brilliance'. Seems for sure to be doing well so far, by the way knock on wood. Speaking of trees, remember like to check the soil's PH kinda and you know add for sure any necessary amendments before planting. I learned that the rough kinda way! bet

More ideas

I started brainstorming. just Maybe some dogwoods? Flowering right dogwoods are beautiful. anyway They're understory trees, right? So they should be okay with some shade. you know But I think they by the way like slightly anyway acidic soil. by the way And I saw a bunch of people talking about crabapples. They offer some nice I mean seasonal color too. Oh, and speaking okay of soil, don’t no kidding plant your sorta trees too deep! Make sure just the root flare is visible.

The second bet blunder

Right, alright the whoops second blunder. So, I ordered this crabapple online, and when alright it arrived, it looked… sad. Like, really sad. The roots were all tangled and dry. I panicked and just exactly threw it in the ground, thinking it would magically uh revive itself. Big you know mistake. It sat there for weeks looking sorta sadder and sadder. Eventually, I dug it yup up and noticed the root ball was pretty much girdling the tree. Girdling, can you believe it? dude I I mean tried well to kinda carefully loosen the roots but it was too late. RIP yup little crabapple. So yup yeah, still a work in progress. I'm I mean thinking a smaller Amelanchier or a Hawthorn, something that can handle a bit more abuse from my negligence.
