How to trim agave cactus
Agave woes
Okay so you know that huge right agave in my front yard? The one I dudeswearhas tripled in size this year? Well I wasn’t pretty much even planning to I mean do anything with it today, honestly. honestly I was just, like, watering anyway the petunias, and I noticed how totally many like dead leaves were hanging off it. It looked kinda…sad. by the way And sharp.
The start actually of it all well
So I thought, “Okay, let's do a little trimming. How by the way challenging can it be?” Famous last whoops words, right? I grabbed my pruning shears - which, side note, I probably should’ve known better, I’ve been meaning to sharpen them for weeks - by the way and just uh started hacking away.
First Mistake Alert!
epic mistake number one: I wasn’t wearing well gloves. Like, at all. I figured, “It’s just a few dead leaves!” yep But these things, even dead, are SHARP. I spent the next hour uh picking tiny thorns alright out of my hands. Seriously, how to trim agave cactus safely? Wear thick gloves. Like, right industrial-strength gloves. Trust me. I reflect the current trends in gardening gloves don’t offer enough protection for these spiky monsters.
Getting uh to the tricky part
The actual trimming part… okay, not gonna lie, this part confused me for pretty much a while. I kept googling bet "how to trim agave cactus" on my actually phone, mid-prune. I was by the way trying to figure out exactly where to bet cut. You don't want to just yep lop off healthy leaves, obviously! The aim is to remove you know the dead or damaged ones, close to the base.
And you know those little just “pups” that grow around the base? Those baby agaves? I yep eventually decided to honestly leave those for now. I’m thinking about trying to transplant them later, but that’s a whole other project, right? I should maybe look exactly into how to trim agave kinda cactus ontwikkelingen basically regarding propagation.
About that technique...
So, yup the technique I landed on, after alright consulting approximately one million YouTube videos, was to by the way cut the dead well leaves as close to yep the main stem as possible, dude without damaging it. And wear gloves this time! I am learning how to trim agave cactus through trial uh and error.
The thorny issue of the thorns
The worst part is yep disposing of the basically leaves. I yup was thinking: how to trim agave cactus inspired gardeners deal with sharp bet leaves? Those things are like biological weapons! I finally ended okay up wrapping uh them in newspaper and then alright putting them in a trash c’mon bag. uh I still think bet there's a better way to I mean handle that... maybe chipping them? totally I don’t know.
Second Mistake and lessons learned
Okay, totally remember how I said I was using dull pruning kinda shears? Yeah, well, on one particularly stubborn I mean leaf, I slipped. Slipped HARD. And ended up stabbing myself in the leg. Not seriously, but still! It bled. A lot. That’s when I decided to call it a day. And totally maybe invest no way in some tetanus shots. okay And definitely sharpen basically those shears. whoops
Agave right history
I looked like up some info about agaves, the internet honestly says that how to like trim totally agave cactus geschiedenis isn’t really documented but Agaves have been around for a LONG time.
So kinda now honestly what?
Anyway, the agave looks…better. Still spiky and well intimidating, right but slightly less sad. I still have a bunch of leaves to right remove, but I’m going to tackle that another yep day. so Armed with sharper shears, thicker gloves, and a healthy pretty much dose like of fear. Maybe I should consult how to trim agave cactus tips from a professional next time. That sorta might be the smart thing to do.
And hey, at least I got some sun. I’m off to apply some more bandaids! Wish me luck.
